School of Sanctuary
At Light Oaks Junior School, we take pride in being part of the Schools of Sanctuary initiative, ensuring that every child and family feels welcomed, supported, and valued. Our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment means that no matter where our pupils come from, they can thrive in a school that celebrates diversity and mutual respect. Our three school values of respect, resilience and responsibility underpin our approach to welcoming international new arrivals, families seeking sanctuary in our country and all children across our school. We have, this year, applied to be a School of Sanctuary and have developed a number of initiatives to ensure we are rewarded for our efforts.
Salford – A City of Sanctuary
We are proud to be part of the city of Salford, a designated City of Sanctuary that embraces people seeking safety and refuge. As part of Salford Council’s initiative, we work alongside local organisations to create an inclusive atmosphere that supports new families and encourages understanding of different cultures.
Our School’s Commitment to Inclusion
We actively engage with the Schools of Sanctuary project through a series of initiatives designed to ensure every pupil feels safe, accepted, and empowered to succeed. Here’s how we make a difference:
Belonging Matters
- We have engaged with and are in the process of working towards the Belonging Matters Charter Mark.
- This initiative is an award that recognises schools that are offering the best possible experience for children who have been displaced from their home countries by war or conflict.
- The main focus is children on the recognised resettlement pathways from Hong Kong, Afghanistan or Ukraine, but the principles, advice and strategies have wider application for all International New Arrivals.
Welcoming New Families
- We have collaborated with parents to develop clear procedures that support families joining our school community.
- Through workshops and information sessions, we equip families with guidance on settling into school life and accessing local resources.
- Our multilingual resources and dedicated support networks provide assistance in navigating the school system.
Celebrating Refugee Week
- We celebrate refugee week by learning about and celebrating the diverse cultures represented within our school.
- Special lessons and activities explore global traditions, languages, and personal stories to foster understanding and empathy.
- Through assemblies, art projects, and shared cultural activities, we create an environment that honours the experiences of refugee families, as well as families from England and those with connections in many countries.
Future Plans:
Pupil Welcome Ambassadors
- We are planning to develop a team of trained pupil ambassadors to help new students integrate by offering friendship, guidance, and reassurance.
- Ambassadors will provide school tours, introduce classmates, and encourage participation in school activities.
- Regular meetings will ensure that newcomers feel heard and supported throughout their transition.
Join Us in Creating a Culture of Welcome
At Light Oaks Junior School, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and included. By working together as a school community, we ensure that compassion and understanding shape every aspect of our educational environment.
